In the last six months, there has been a lot of deconstruction happening at First In Gardens. We have been pulling, clearing, digging, grinding, hauling, and piling. We have a vision for this community space, but it doesn’t look like much life can grow there at the moment amidst all that has been jettisoned.

Today I was halted in my tracks as I spotted a flower being undeterred. This daffodil has kept on doing life, because that is ultimately what Life wants to do - to emerge into spaces in all its beauty, no matter what the space looks like.

This image of determined creation reminded me that life has been growing at First In Gardens all along the way. It’s in the individuals who are gathering and aligning their efforts in nurturing community. The friend from a lifetime ago now committed to showing up 3 days a week to support the mission. The laughter emerging while juggling last year’s unearthed tomatoes. The construction material being heavily discounted and donated for our use. All the champions inviting us to connect with their friends and colleagues who will want to learn about and support FIG from across the county and out of state. The fact that people have come by planes, trains, automobiles, buses, and skateboards to lend a hand in building flourishing connection.

My grandmother Betty referred to a daffodil as “God’s telephone.” Well, I’d like to use this golden beauty to shout out our immense gratitude. Here’s to tending life, together.
