On Memorial Day, First In Gardens attended a Veteran’s Picnic in Long’s Park. Along with veterans sharing time together on this day of remembrance, there were national, state, and local community groups in attendance. Their missions involve support to service members during transition from active duty back to civilian life. For many, this transition is very difficult and proves an ongoing challenge. Mental and physical healthcare, housing, family and marriage counseling, addiction counseling, job placement, and social opportunities are a short list of the kinds of aid needed.
I was very moved by the kindness and care these groups offered, and the motivation expressed to connect with each other. Healing can not occur alone, nor can support efforts. There exists an understanding that community groups must partner together, must weave our strings of assistance together, to create a wider and stronger web. This is the mindset of grassroots activism, a bottom up approach. We all come with different experiences, skills and offerings, and together this network encourages and sustains immense growth. Yet one more metaphor reflected in the garden!
